El interés permanente de conocer músicos en cualquier parte del mundo condujo previsibles preguntas a mi hija María José y su esposo Sebastián (que viven en Dublín desde Julio del 2001) acerca de la presencia del jazz en la capital irlandesa. La respuesta invariable: -Si, en Irlanda hay buenos músicos de jazz, hay “pubs” específicos donde tocan, hay conciertos y festivales importantes lo que hace que, regularmente, visiten la isla figuras importantes de diversos lugares del mundo.
En la primera visita familiar realizada en marzo del 2003, en una angosta calle hallamos un local (Paul Ryan Music) dedicado a la venta de instrumentos musicales de viento. Con la sensación de estar en el lugar correcto, luego de ver algunos accesorios, le pregunté a Paul Ryan -el dueño-:
¿Dónde puedo escuchar buen jazz en Dublín?

La respuesta dio origen a esta corta historia.

Introduction
My permanent interest in meeting musicians in any part of the world led to foreseeable questions to my daughter Maria Jose and her husband Sebastian – who live in Dublin since July 2001 - about the presence of jazz in the Irish capital. And the constant answer was, ‘Yes, there are good jazz musicians in Ireland. There are specific pubs where they play; there also are important concerts and festivals, and that’s why outstanding figures from all over the world visit the island quite often.’
In a first family visit in March 2003, we found a shop (Paul Ryan Music) in a narrow street that sold wind instruments. With the feeling that I was in the right place, and after having a look at a few accessories, I asked Paul Ryan -the owner-, ‘Where can I listen to good jazz in Dublin?’

The answer gave origin to this short story:

The venue is located at 12 Angiers Street in Dublin, Ireland, and it's called JJ Smyths (JJ's).

Se trata de un tradicional "pub" dublinés en un edificio clásico de planta baja y tres pisos: se accede a la planta baja por la puerta de la izquierda, éste es el lugar de encuentro y bebidas. La puerta de la derecha conduce a las escaleras que llevan a la planta alta, un salón alargado con escenario, barra y mesas a los costados, donde diariamente hay música en vivo. Allí -todos los jueves de todas las semanas del año- se presenta el grupo "Isotope" que normalmente cuenta con los primos Richie Buckley en saxo tenor, Hugh Buckley en guitarra.

It’s a traditional Dublin pub in a classic three-storey building: The entrance door is on the left. The ground floor is the place where people get together and have drinks. The door on the right leads to the stairs that go up to the first floor, where there is a long room with a stage, a bar and tables on the sides, and where they play live music on a daily basis. Every Thursday of every week of the year, there plays the band "Isotope", usually with the cousins Richie Buckley (tenor sax) and Hugh Buckley (guitar).

Una muy agradable sorpresa escuchar a ese cuarteto, músicos de gran nivel en una ambiente muy apropiado para escuchar con atención y tranquilidad.
Los saludamos con mucho entusiasmo aquella noche de Marzo de 2003 y ya no había dudas de la jerarquía del jazz de Irlanda.

A continuación se puede apreciar un video recién descubierto en el sitio You Tube, de algún jueves en el JJ´s:
Parte de un solo de Michael Buckley en saxo tenor, solo completo de Hugh Buckley en guitarra y solo -lamentablemente truncado en la filmación- de Richie Buckley en saxo tenor.

Michael y Richie son hermanos, en tanto que Hugh es primo de ambos.

It was certainly a nice surprise to listen to this quartet; high-level musicians in a very appropriate atmosphere for listening attentively and peacefully.
That evening in March 2003, we greeted them with lots of enthusiasm, and there was no doubt about the hierarchy of Irish jazz.

It starts with a tenor sax solo by Michael Buckley, goes on with a complete guitar solo by Hugh Buckley, and then there’s a tenor sax solo by Richie Buckley, which is unfortunately incomplete.

Michael and Richie are brothers, while Hugh is their cousin.

Una pequeña exploración de antecedentes me permite agregar una corta síntesis de sus carreras.
El origen de la predilección por el jazz de estos primos es herencia directa de Dick Buckley (padre de Richie, ya fallecido) quien fuera uno de los músicos pioneros del jazz en Irlanda.
Viajan y actúan por Europa y EEUU (New York) con asiduidad y Richie llegó a Sudamérica (Río de Janeiro) solamente una vez como integrante de la banda de Van Morrison.
La visita a Argentina los ha motivado especialmente.

Hugh Buckley (guitarra) nació en Dublín y ha desarrollado una extensa carrera como guitarrista. Tiene dos discos editados a su nombre (“Yes indeed” [1998] y “Spirit level” [2001]).
Ambos CD´s están grabados en New York y en los dos contó con la presencia de su amigo y gran pianista James Williams, lamentable y prematuramente fallecido en el 2004, además en el primero de ellos también del notable contrabajista Peter Washington y Richie Buckley en saxo tenor.
Ha tocado con -además de sus amigos James Williams y Peter Bernstein- Bobby Watson, Javon Jackson, Peter Washington, Guy Barker, Scott Hamilton, Louis Stewart, Brad Mehldau, Harry Allen, Joe Temperley, Mike Carr, George Masso, Peter Appleyard, Stacey Kent, Andra Sparks, Alan Barnes, Brian Kelloch, Bruce Adams, Georgie Fame, Van Morrison y Lisa Stansfield.
En el festival de Cork (Irlanda) del año pasado acompañaron al renombrado trompetista Jon Faddis -quién fuera director de la big band de jazz del Carnegie Hall- y en el de hace una semana con Louis Stewart.

Hugh Buckley

Richie Buckley (saxo tenor), también dublinés, es muy conocido como miembro de la banda de Van Morrison de cuyo grupo es el miembro más antiguo, pero ha actuado con Freddie Hubbard, Jiggs Wigham, Dave McKenna, como así también con Bob Dylan, Jon Hendricks, Georgie Fame y Carlos Santana para nombrar algunos. Ha tocado y grabado con famosos artistas irlandeses incluyendo a The Cranberries, Christy Moore, Sinéad O'Connor, Lord of the Dance, Riverdance y Bill Whelan. Ha grabado también con Elmer Bernstein y Barry Manilow,
“The General” (película premiada en Cannes, 1998, que narra las andanzas del famoso gangster dublinés Martin Cahill, dirigida por John Boorman y donde actúan Jon Voight y Brian Gleeson) cuenta con la música que compuso especialmente y donde además tocó saxos soprano y tenor, editada en CD por Hummingbird Records. Escribió la música del documental sobre la vida de Lee Marvin (“Lee Marvin”) también dirigido por Boorman; “Luke” (Luke Kelly, dirigido por Sinead O’Brien) y 'Friel' (Brian Friel) y finalmente también la música de “La memoria de los peces” (“Goldfish memory” [Liz Gill, 2003]).
Cuenta con un CD editado a su nombre (“Your love is Here” [2000]) que cuenta con composiciones originales, dedicado a la memoria de su padre Dick y con la presencia como invitado especial del famoso trompetista Lew Soloff quien fuera integrante fundador de “Blood, Sweat and Tears”.

2004, encuentro con Hugh y Martin

En el año 2004, conocí al contrabajista francés Martin Gruet y nos divertimos tocando en un par de ocasiones. Charlando sobre el jazz en Irlanda y al expresarle de mi admiración por los Buckley mencionó la posibilidad de organizar algo para el año próximo, ya que conocía a Hugh.
Cruzando algunos e-mails finalmente pudimos alcanzar ese objetivo el 19 de mayo de 2005 donde contamos también con el baterista alemán George Urich.
Fue un encuentro muy valioso. Además de la música, hubo "buena onda" desde el principio lo que originó amistad y proyectos para el otro año.

2004, a meeting with Hugh and Martin
In 2004, I met the French double bass player Martin Gruet, and we had fun playing a couple of times. We were chatting about jazz in Ireland, and I was expressing my admiration for the Buckleys when he mentioned the possibility of organising something the next year, since he actually knew Hugh.
After several emails, we finally reached our goal on 19th May, 2005, when we also played with the German drummer George Urich.
It was a very valuable meeting. Apart from the music, there had been ‘good vibes’ from the very beginning, which brought about friendship and projects for the following year.

Reencuentro en el 2006

Durante Febrero del 2006 unos días antes de nuestro viaje, Hugh me escribió para proponerme tocar en el JJ´s los jueves 22 y 29 de Febrero, dado que Richie estaría de gira por Europa del Este. La demora en aceptar el ofrecimiento fue de 30 segundos.
Esas dos noches significaron un doble honor: hacer música en esa compañía y en ese lugar.

Reiteramos además nuestra actuación del 2005 en el Cobalt Café and Gallery, el martes 14 de Marzo con Hugh y Martín.

Reunion in 2006

In February 2006, a few days before our trip, Hugh emailed me suggesting that we play at JJ’s on Thursdays 22nd and 29th of February, since Richie would be touring Eastern Europe. I took me 30 seconds to take the offer.
Those two evenings were a double honour: making music in such company and in such a venue.

We repeated our 2005 gig at the Cobalt Café and Gallery, on Tuesday 14th March with Hugh and Martin.

Víspera de San Patricio

A un par de días del regreso, el jueves 16 de marzo -día previo al famoso St Patrick´s Day de Irlanda- fui al JJ´s para ver a "Isotope", esta vez con Richie en el saxo tenor y en los últimos temas del segundo set me invitaron a tocar, otra gran distinción.

A few days before coming back, on Thursday 16th March -the day before the famous Irish St Patrick’s Day- I went down to JJ’s to see "Isotope", this time with Richie on tenor sax. They asked me to play in the last themes of the second set, another great distinction.

Inolvidable fiesta. Ya había comenzado San Patricio, mucha camaradería y muchas "pintas" de Guinness, mucha gente en la calle después de medianoche preparando el día esperado, despedida... ¿y que posibilidad existe de que vengan a la Argentina? ¿Por que no?

What an unforgettable party. St Patrick’s Day had already started; there was a friendly atmosphere, many pints of Guinness, many people on the streets after midnight, getting ready for the long awaited day. Farewell... But... were there any chances of them coming to Argentina? Why not?

Festival de Jazz en Rosario

Al regreso a Rosario relatando esta experiencia hice una tentativa: ¿se podría conseguir una invitación oficial para Hugh y Richie a nuestro festival de Jazz local?
La décima edición se haría nuevamente el Noviembre, faltaba mucho tiempo y habría seleccionadores para las propuestas. Con las copias de los CD´s editados y los antecedentes de los dublineses, finalmente aceptados, surgió la invitación oficial para ambos.

When I was back in Rosario, I talked about my experience and I made an attempt: Would it be possible to get an official invitation for Hugh and Richie to come to our local Jazz Festival??
The tenth edition would be held again in November. That was a long time away, and there would be a selection board for the proposals. After presenting copies of CDs by the Dubliners as well as their antecedents, they were finally accepted, and we got an official invitation for both.

Hugh siempre estuvo confiado, contando con la invitación formal, en conseguir el patrocinio oficial para los pasajes aéreos a Argentina. Efectivamente ese apoyo se materializó en el mes de Septiembre, gracias a Culture Ireland. Esta es la repartición gubernamental que se ocupa de promover lo mejor del arte de Irlanda prestando ayuda para el desarrollo de las relaciones culturales internacionales de ese país. Fue creada en el año 2005 y depende del Ministro de Arte, Deporte y Turismo.

Hugh was always confident, providing we got the formal invitation, that he would get official sponsorship for the flight tickets to Argentina. In fact, the sponsorship became real in September, thanks to Culture Ireland. This is the governmental department in charge of promoting the best of arts in Ireland by providing assistance for the development of international cultural relationships. It was created in 2005 and reports directly to the Ministry for Arts, Sport and Tourism.
